Introduction

The idea for the development of the Greenhouse Controller grew out of a desire to learn more about "Controls". We also wanted to acquire a familiarity with instrumentation software. This system will provide a demonstration of how the LabVIEW program can be used to control various devices. In industrial process control, instrumentation that provide inputs to control system software is very costly. The proposal of controlling various parameters of a greenhouse environment gives us an excellent opportunity to experience "process control" without incurring the cost that would be required in an industrial setting. The instrumentation needed to sense and control the greenhouse environment will be relatively inexpensive. Common I/O signals that are used for control in industrial settings are flow, temperature, level and pressure. Our proposed design includes four inputs that will provide data to the software program: temperature (one analog input), relative humidity (one analog input) and light intensity (two discrete inputs). Five outputs will be demonstrated: two for temperature, one for humidity and two for lighting. In addition, flow indication will be observed on the graphic interface. Thus, our proposed design will provide an excellent opportunity to become familiar with process control and instrumentation software.
